Expression of Interest | Board of Directors 

Memunatu Magazine is a nonprofit social enterprise that creates educational media for and with adolescent girls in Africa and the diaspora. We believe that girls can be the writers, readers, and leaders of their own narratives. Over the past 5 years, Memunatu has reached readers in over 14 countries, through print, digital, and events. Memunatu is currently recruiting Board Members to join in the mission to empower adolescent girls through media.

Expectations

As a Board Member, you will be joining a scrappy, international team, composed of youth and experienced professionals who are committed to empowering African girls. Memunatu Magazine is headquartered in Washington D.C. with meetings held virtually. During your time on the Board of Directors, you can expect:

  • Monthly check-ins: 60-minute working meetings where we tackle a specific topic/challenge (attendance highly encouraged)
  • Quarterly meetings: 10am EST/ 3pm WAT held on Saturday/Sunday to go over Memunatu strategy and overall organizational health (attendance mandatory)

Qualities

To lead Memunatu Magazine into its next chapter, we are looking for incoming Board Members  with the following qualities:

  • Passion for empowering adolescent girls
  • Network that can supercharge Memunatu’s growth in Africa and the diaspora
  • Experience in one of Memunatu’s overlapping focus areas (education, media/ journalism, social impact, gender equity, school distribution)
  • Ability to contribute or fundraise for at least $3K annually to further Memunatu’s mission
  • Responsiveness and access to regular internet connectivity

In addition to the general Board Member role, we are also recruiting Treasurer and Secretary to join the Board of Directors. For the treasurer role, fundraising experience is essential and prior experience building cross-sector partnerships is a plus! For the secretary role, legal experience, particularly in international contexts, is an asset.
