Fall 2020 Internship Opportunities (3 roles)

Overview

Memunatu is a 501(c)(3) non profit publisher that empowers adolescent girls (10-17 years old) in Africa and the diaspora. Through a print and digital platform, we amplify content that promotes literacy, leadership, and empowerment. Distributed through single copy sales and in bulk through schools and organizations, Memunatu is inspiring a new generation of African girls. We are excited to launch Ed-Talks, mini video lessons from African changemakers that share insight and advice for a middle and high school audience..We have three internships available to bring these stories to life: (1) Editorial, (2) Design, and (3) Curriculum & Learning

Editorial Internship

What you may be going as a Editorial Volunteer Intern:

  • Preparing audio/video interviews for print
  • Editing and proofreading articles for publication
  • Researching prospective Ed-Talks interviewees and contributors
  • Assisting with the submission process
  • Contributing to social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Supporting International Day of the Girl event/initiative
  • Writing blog posts

This is a good experience for you if:

  • You are excited about empowering and educating girls
  • You have experience or interest in working on Africa and diaspora-related topics
  • You love creating content and are passionate about communications 
  • You have strong English language skills, writing, reading, and speaking (native or bilingual proficiency)
  • You have regular internet access. For us, that means you can be available for all weekly video call meetings, have the ability to check your email at least every other day, and can fulfill the above activities online.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Please submit your resume, cover letter, and writing sample (can be a blog, school assignment less than 500 words) by Friday, September 11 at 11:59pm ET.

Design Internship

What you may be going as a Design Volunteer Intern:

  • Editing video lessons and stories for Ed-Talks
  • Designing images, layouts, and other materials for publication and social media
  • Posting Ed-Talk material on social media platforms and channels
  • Researching relevant issue areas
  • Contributing to International Day of the Girl event
  • Supporting layout design for the digital and print publication

This is a good experience for you if:

  • You are excited about empowering and educating girls
  • You have experience or interest in working on Africa and diaspora-related topics
  • You love creating content and are passionate about communications 
  • You have strong English language skills, writing, reading, and speaking (native or bilingual proficiency)
  • You have regular internet access. For us, that means you can be available for all weekly video call meetings, have the ability to check your email at least every other day, and can fulfill the above activities online.

Curriculum and Learning Intern

What you may be going as a Curriculum and Learning Volunteer Intern:

  • Researching schools and programs for Memunatu Ed-Talks 
  • Supporting feedback and learning mechanisms between Memunatu and education partners
  • Contributing to Memunatu teaching-related tools
  • Researching relevant issue areas
  • Contributing to International Day of the Girl event
  • Supporting the Memunatu team as needed

This is a good experience for you if:

  • You are excited about empowering and educating girls
  • You have experience or interest in working on Africa and diaspora-related topics
  • You love creating content and are passionate about communications 
  • You have strong English language skills, writing, reading, and speaking (native or bilingual proficiency)
  • You have regular internet access. For us, that means you can be available for all weekly video call meetings, have the ability to check your email at least every other day, and can fulfill the above activities online.
