Journalism as Storytelling

A zealous baseball fan, a struggling musician touring cross country, a protester, a retired local bookstore owner, the curator of a renowned art museum; everyone has a story. Upon first glance, the stories of these individuals and the individuals themselves seem extremely different. They span multiple generations, are from different parts of the country, have different interests and perhaps completely opposing outlooks. They, however, are all passionate. Although dissimilar in countless ways, these human beings are tied by their mutual commitment their own greater purpose.

Even so, why is learning about these seemingly irrelevant individuals important? It is the job of the journalist to uncover this meaning. The reporter must see beyond surface details to derive the truth for the benefit of her subscribers. In my experience as an editorial writer, I have found that reporting and sharing the narratives of others unites a network of readers that can relate to a shared struggle, triumph or experience. Maybe there is someone in need of inspiration, to witness the journey of another and draw strength from that person’s prosperity or attempt to overcome.

That is my personal hope for the readers of Memunatu. I believe that when a girl is able to see herself in the likeness of another, she too will become inspired to press beyond her own boundaries and write her own success story.
